How to Avoid Scope Creep in Your Web Design Projects

    August 23, 2018 — By Brain Technosys

If you have been working as a web designer for some time, you will realize the ways of a client who intends to extract maximum work from you. Though this may occur in a gradual manner, you may feel why you have taken such a job. You may wonder if all this effort is worth or could have asked for extra money. You may also feel that you should reject this client’s job. This stressful situation may be due to your client’s high expectation. It may also be due to mismanagement of time or trying to handle many assignments, simultaneously. This situation is known as scope creep, which can cause havoc to the business of web designing.

    Meaning of Scope Creep

The terminology, scope creep, does not belong only to web designing. This can be applied in any industry and to any type of project. The actual explanation relates to the total extent of any project that surpasses the main objectives. When you are working on a website, you may aim to complete it within a month. This website, consisting of a small eCommerce site, has ten products with a few email marketing tools related to abandoned carts. Your client insists to introduce a blog and a homepage.

While going through the preliminary objectives, the work may not seem to be difficult. But, how would you feel when you are still working on the same design even after two months or the site becomes a huge complex eCommerce store? This was not the simple design that you had discussed with your client.

These relate to few examples of scope creep, which is tedious, costly and lengthy, taking unnecessary time.

    Method Of Avoiding Scope Creep

It is not possible to remove scope creep entirely. On the other hand, you can try to remove it as far as possible. The reason is that the prosperity of your company rests on it. If you are hired by a company, you can retain your job if scope creep is kept in control. Hence, how can you stay away from scope creep?

    1. Keep Clear Expectations with Your Client

It is extremely important to speak to or meet the client. Here, you can clearly indicate your ideas about the web design and the time taken to complete it. You should specify that there can be no major changes done after the meeting.

    2. Follow Deadlines Given

If you require setting ten deadlines in a month, you can do so. You can have two or three during the course of doing a project. In this manner, you can aim for smaller objectives, and not feel much stressed about completing the ultimate website.

    3. Set Ultimate Date

Deadlines are important, but setting a delivery date is very vital. You should not compromise with this fact. There won’t be much problem if you are unable to keep the first deadline. You can work a bit fast. But, the delivery date should not be altered.

    4. Important To Sign A Contract

It is good to speak to your client. But, it is always better if you insist on signing a written agreement regarding the terms and conditions of the project. This contract should relate to the deadlines and the amount you will receive.

    5. Provision For Committing Mistakes

You must expect some occurrences of scope creep in your project; otherwise, you may feel a sense of failure. This is because a few scope creeps cannot be avoided during projects of web designing. Hence, you should convince yourself to overlook three or four such instances. In this manner, you will not feel dejected about the failures you may face.

Are You Prepared To Prevent Scope Creep?

The deadlines that you set or sign a contract are only a few methods of controlling your scope creep.
